Five For Friday: Week in Review

1. We had a lot of fun over the July 4th weekend. Spent time with friends and family, ate good food and had a generally full but low key weekend.

2. Lily has started to notice boys lately. I’m not sure whether I think this is cute or scary. She seems to have a thing for NASCAR drivers so we’ve got that going for us. She’s told us more than once that she “likes his face” in reference to a couple of different drivers and recently told me that she liked the way a couple of boys looked. I asked her what she liked about them and she said that “they look cool like the race car boys.” *groan* I was hoping we had at least a few more years before she became boy crazy.

3. In other very interesting news…we got a window air conditioner for our play room. The room is above the garage so it just doesn’t say as cool as the rest of the house. Wouldn’t really be a big deal except our treadmill is in that room and it gets quite steamy when you’re doing a workout with the door closed. Now we can turn on the window a/c while we’re exercising and keep it nice and cool.

4. Cam is so in love with his Batman and Superman jammies that I’ve started doing a load of laundry mid-week just so I can wash them and not have to fight with him to wear Buzz Lightyear two nights a week.

5. Jason and I are having a date night on Saturday and we’re going to check out this Brazilian Steak House place. Apparently there are guys walking around the dining room with swords filled with various types of meat. There is a dial on your table that you turn to green when you want more meat to be delivered. You turn it to red to say, “Whoa! That’s enough meat for now!” Then back to green, and so on. I’m not usually much of a meat person but I fully expect to have a meat hangover on Sunday.

KISS and Hook

I’ve been thinking that I want to start writing on here more so there’s no time like the present to get started, eh?

We had a pretty pleasant weekend! We decided to take the kids to the Children’s Museum on Saturday afternoon for a couple of reasons. 1) it’s hot as blazes lately so that’s a nice cool indoor activity. 2) Our membership expires in August so we HAD to go at least one more time before then to get our money out of the membership. 3) We realized that they have a Rock and Roll exhibit right now which is right up Cam’s alley. AND…they had the KISS guy’s costumes on display which was beyond exciting for both kids. I have to wonder how many preschoolers are KISS fans solely because of Rock & Roll All Night, courtesy of Guitar Hero. Hmmm…

I mowed the grass (complete with weed eating! and blowing the clippings off of the patio!) on Saturday morning while Jason played Lincoln Logs with the kids. Somehow mowing the grass seems to have become my job this summer. I’m totally not complaining I just think it’s kind of funny for some reason. I view it as cross-training so if I can get in a workout and finish a chore all at one time I’m all for it. I love to multitask!

Sunday morning was pretty low key again. Jason ran 7 miles on the treadmill while the kids and I colored and danced and played monster trucks. Then we did the 30 Day Shred DVD together. Lily amazes me every time she does this with me! After naps we headed downtown to check out the youth theater production of Peter Pan. It was really, really good! I’m amazed at all of the hard work these kids put into the show. It clearly took a lot of time and dedication to get all of the dances, gymnastics, wire work (for flying!) and other details together to put on a great show.

The kids really enjoyed it too and Cameron rushed to find his Peter Pan costume as soon as we got home! Funny thing about Cameron this weekend is that he seems to have developed a sensitive side. Not that he’s never been sensitive before but songs have never really made him tear up until Sunday. I don’t know if he was just tired or what but the boy got all sad and teary on Sunday morning when I turned on a slow-ish Phish song (of all things) and then three times during Peter Pan he started to cry when they were singing lullaby or other sad sounding songs. It’s like he just got overwhelm with grief when the lost boys left to go back with Wendy and Peter curled up on the stage in despair. His bottom lip came out and trembled and he kept trying to take deep breaths and rub his hands over his face to keep from crying. I really didn’t know whether to cry or laugh, it was just so sad/cute. We have yet to see if this was just a Sunday thing or if this song sensitivity is a new phase we’re entering. Stay tuned!

Five for Friday: Random Cameron

1. Internet, 1: Melissa, 0. Yeah…so, Cameron has decided that he no longer wants to go potty by himself. Little stinker. He’ll be grabbing and dancing around and OBVIOUSLY have to go pee yet he will insist “all long day” that he doesn’t need to go. When we finally convince him that he does need to go he’ll refuse to go unless he help him. We’re trying to get away from helping him but he seems to have different plans. Considering starting a sticker chart for him again to get over this hump.

2. When we disagree with him or tell him not to do something his reply is often, “No, Mommy! I don’t like those words!”

3. He got a buzz cut a couple of weeks ago and it turns out he has a double cowlick. That helps to explain why his hair always has a really thick patch on the top. Now that he’s buzzed he has a little ridge between the cowlicks, ala a Rhodesian Ridgeback!

4. He has a big time superhero obsession right now. The Batman and Superman pajamas we got him a couple of months ago were our best and worst purchases ever. Best because it’s easy to get him dressed for bed. Worst because he pretty much refuses to wear anything else. He also tells us, “You can call me Bat-Cam.”

5. “Mommy! I have a dood idea!” “What’s your good idea, buddy?” “My dood idea is…” Love this!

Tempting Fate

Alright…I’ve decided to tempt fate and share a couple of things on the internet. It’s risky, I know.

1. I ran for a whole mile pain free yesterday! This whole being injured thing has really sucked. It really started with the stress reaction in October which led to a knee problem in December that has taken a long time to resolve. I finally went to the doctor last month and while x-rays didn’t reveal any major problems he diagnosed patellar tendinitis (runner’s knee). Basically, my knee cap kind of leans to the outside rather than staying centered. This, apparently, doesn’t cause any real damage but can be quite painful. He referred me to physical therapy for a few weeks and it seems to be helping. I’ve been doing some stretching and strengthening exercises and have slowly started running again. I’ve done a few run/walk intervals over the past couple of weeks but yesterday was my first prolonged run…although I hesitate to call 1 mile a prolonged run. Either way, I feel like I’m on my way to getting back to regular running. Hooray!

2. Cameron is potty trained! The sticker chart is what really got him motivated to potty train. We started off with giving him a prize after 5 successful visits to the potty. Then bumped it to 10 and then 15. (Lily even started making the charts for him!) After a few weeks we decided to do away with the charts since he was racking up prizes and we were going broke. (We also witnessed some interesting sibling dynamics during this process. Lily got quite distressed/upset a few times since Cam was getting so much attention during potty training. She would ask us why she can’t get stickers and prizes when she goes potty. We had to explain that we did all of this for her when she was Cam’s age and I think she understood that but it was still upsetting to her. We did take her out to choose a few treats in hopes of evening things up a little. She seems much happier now.)

So, Cam has been staying dry overnight for probably 2 months now and he has only had a few accidents during the day. He’s started wearing big boy underwear during the day and he’s loving that! We’re still putting him in a diaper at night but mostly because we still have several left…and he spends most of the night in our bed and we don’t need to risk any messy accidents in there.

Alright…I’ve confessed two things that are going well. Tonight I suppose I’ll tear my ACL and Cameron will start having lots of accidents.

Summer Cut

Friday Night Fright

Imagine if your kids were watching TV while you fixed dinner. You look in to check and they’re both glassy-eyed at the Backyardigans so you return to your work in the kitchen.

Imagine looking in a few minutes later to find your 4 year old sprawled on the couch and your two year old unseen.

Imagine if you asked your 4 year old where your two year old was and she barely raised an arm and motioned to the front door without removing her eyes from the TV.

Imagine if you looked at the front door and saw it was slightly ajar.

Imagine if you ran outside and didn’t see your two year old in the front yard.

Imagine if you ran to the side of the house and found him pounding on the gate to the back yard.

Imagine the shock and fear on his face when he turned around and saw you watching him.

Try not to imagine what else could have happened.

This was us last Friday. I was outside mowing while Jason fixed dinner (gender roles are obviously strictly enforced in our house). Apparently Cameron decided he needed to come see me so he put on his shoes and headed out the front door and around to the back yard. I know that my stomach jumped into my throat while Jason was telling me this. I can only imagine what he felt like when Cameron was no where to been seen in the front yard. *shudder* I think he knows not to do it again. Apparently he was pretty freaked out when he saw Jason. And Lily…kids are so funny about things. It’s obviously not her job to watch Cameron but a heads up that he was headed outside would have been nice….especially considering that she has no problem urgently telling us that he’s going upstairs or touching the crayons or (GASP!) won’t stop looking at her!

Sorry about the title of this post. Couldn’t think of anything that didn’t sound totally ridiculous so I just went with cheesy.
