An Apple A Day…

…well, given the amount of germs that have been making the rounds at our house lately we should probably be eating more apples.

Good thing we visited an apple orchard a couple of weeks ago as a school field trip!

We got to tour the refrigerator room and bakery and learn how they prep the apples.

We learned about different types of apples and even took a tractor ride out to the orchard where we got to pick an apple off of the tree. Lily is still talking about the proper apple picking technique so the apple doesn’t get bruised.

There were a few animals in kind of a petting zoo format. I learned that turkeys are goofy looking things and pretty funny when they start to make their gobble-gobble sound! They also had donkeys and goats and chickens, OH MY!

The kids also got to go down a slide made of some kind of huge plastic tube. I swear my kids have no fear when it comes to rides and playground equipment. I know at one point I heard the kids’ buddy Grayson say, “Let Cam go first because he’s the bravest!” Or…his daddy just set him on the slide and let go. Either way, he loved it and wanted to do it over and over and over!

Good fun at the apple orchard store too! We came home with a 1/4 peck of apples and a delicious dutch apple pie. Seriously, drooling over here right now remembering that pie.

Pictures!

I’ve been slacking off on the blog lately but I’m just about ready to get back in gear. Meanwhile, enjoy some pictures!

Setting A Good Example

One of the things I love the most about running is the example Jason and I are setting for our kids. The kids know that we both run and it’s just a normal thing for them. They know that when we have our running clothes on we’ll be headed out for a run soon. They like to stand in the living room window and watch us leave. When we get home Lily avoids us because we’re too sweaty! Cam, on the other hand, walks up and says “Mommy, you sweaty? You have a good run?” He has no qualms about getting sweaty hugs from Mom and Dad!

We manage to time our runs so we miss out on very little time with the kids. Jason does most of his runs on the treadmill at 5:00 in the morning. Lately I have been doing my weekday runs right after work. I either run home or run to a place where Jason and the kids can easily pick me up on their way home. By doing this I really only miss picking the kids up from school and the 10 minute drive home. I could run on the treadmill after they’re in bed but I’ve found that getting my run over with makes me much more relaxed during the evening. On nights that I have to run after the kids are in bed I find myself trying to rush them to bed so I can get started.

One of my favorite things is when I’m running home and Jason and the kids drive past me on their way home and cheer, “Go Mommy Go!” Gives me quite a boost to finish my run! The kids have also started chanting “Go Runner Go!” whenever they see someone running along the street. This cracks me up every time!

The kids are both interested in running now. Lily ran her first race a few weeks ago and can’t wait to run another one. They’re signed up for the kids’ races at Disney on the marathon weekend. Can’t wait for this! Cameron just walked up to me and blew a kiss and said “I go for run. Be back.” He then took off and did his lurching run on the circle through the living room, hallway, kitchen and dining room.

A few weeks ago Jason and I thought about how much fun it will be in a few years to take family vacations centered on running. We could choose some 5K in an area we want to visit and all go run the race as a family as part of our vacation. I think this sounds like a lot of fun! I hope our kids will enjoy something like this too!

Lazy/Busy Weekend

Our weekend was a mix of lazy/busy. OK…maybe lazy isn’t the right word since we didn’t just lay around at all. Jason and I kicked off the weekend by each doing a 9 mile run. We had hoped to run together this weekend but never figured out what to do with those pesky kids so we ended up going solo. This was my new longest run ever and I was pretty proud of the pace I kept (9:28 or so)! This weekend I step it up to double digits with a whopping 10 miles on Saturday! EEK!

Once we got past the morning runs the rest of Saturday was pretty peaceful. Cameron didn’t even leave the house all day. Lily joined me on a couple of trips to Once Upon a Child where I sold some of Cameron’s baby clothes. The Great Baby Item Clear-out of ‘09 is underway…more to come on that later. Cam took a nice long nap on Saturday afternoon, Jason grilled out and Lily played her Dora game on the Wii. I’m amazed at how quickly she picked up the game. It was a Christmas gift and she struggled with understanding it a little bit at the time. She had a lot more fun playing with it this time. We got the kids in bed a little early and settled in to watch some college football. An all around good day!

Sunday we hit the road bright and early and headed to Kings Island for one last roller coaster adventure this year and to check out the Halloween festivities at the park. I just have to say that my kids are awesome! They did such a great job on the drive, watching movies with no complaints or arguments or “are we there yet” business. We got to the park and headed to the Fairly Odd Coaster at rope drop. Lily absolutely loves this coaster and would have ridden it 582 times yesterday if we let her. She gets SO excited! I love the way she tears off of the ride with Jason and runs to me saying, “Mommy, now I want to ride it with YOU!” Cam enjoyed the kiddie cars as always. He really impressed us by happily riding the Scooby Doo dark ride! When we were there in June he wouldn’t even go in the line. We told him to make a scary laugh to scare away the ghosts and that’s exactly what he did! “Ha, ha, ha” in a deep throaty voice! I hope this means that he’ll be agreeable to go on the dark rides at Disney! There was a Halloween area with a hay bale maze, ‘haunted’ house and pumpkin patch. The kids had fun going through that area and checking things out. Lily finally got her fancy face paint that she’s been wanting all summer! Both kids got to play a game and they each won new stuffed toys. We saw a music/dance show with all kinds of creepy characters (werewolf, vampire, mummy, etc) and the kids got turns on all of the rides. Lily even added a new ride to her portfolio. Some kind of spinning up and down thing that would have been sure to ruin the rest of my day. Thank goodness Cameron is still too little to ride things like that so I can continue to opt out for a couple more years. “That ride? Oh, yes I would LOVE to ride that but someone has to stay with Cameron. Darn!” Jason and I each got a ride on Diamondback and Lily asked us when she would be big enough to ride it!

We headed home at around 5:30 and made a brief stop for Jason to get some Tony Packo’s hot pickles (the real reason I think he wanted to go to Ohio) and then stopped for dinner about two Backyardigans episodes later. The kids were beat and Lily kept asking when she could put on her pajamas. Got them changed and started driving again. About 15 minutes later they were snoozing. Jason and I listened to a comedy show which made the rest of the drive seem very easy. Especially for me since I just sat there and laughed and ate candy.

Next weekend: A birthday party for the dogs. How did I get myself into this?

Five for Friday: Cameron Loves

1. Mickey Mouse: Chewing on his nose

2. Monster trucks: See birthday video below

3. His Mama: Until very recently wanted nothing to do with Jason between 7p and 7a. Now he allows him to play ‘monster’ while he’s getting his jammies on.

4.Watching the Dream Along with Mickey show (aka: Dreams Come True): For a couple of weeks he begged for this every day. He even sat quietly for a hair cut while this played which was a first! He MUST have the sword and wand that they got from Cinderella’s Royal Table breakfast during our last visit to Disney World. The bad news: BOTH of those toys broke last week and are sitting on the kitchen counter along with about a dozen other toys that need some kind of repair. Need to get out the super glue soon and get to work.

5. Asking “Wah dooooin’?” (What are you doing?): I love this! If one of us leaves the room he’ll ask, “Wah Daddy/Mommy doooin’?” or “Where Daddy/Mommy do?” So cute!
