Media Free Weekend…

…well, for the kids at least.

On Friday night I reached a breaking point. I realized that the first words out of Lily’s mouth in the morning are, “Mommy, can we watch something?” The first thing she asks when we get in the car after work is, “Can we watch something when we get home?” Cameron begs for “Game, game” every time we get out the computer and wanders the house saying “Mahna, Mahna” in hopes that we’ll show him the Muppet’s video again. Enough was enough and we declared this weekend a media free weekend for the kids. Obviously we weren’t going to deny OURSELVES for the entire weekend but we did stay off of the computers while the kids were up.

Of course we picked a GRAND weekend for this little experiment. It was rainy and cold and even snowed a bit on Sunday. Cameron seems to be cutting molars and both kids blew off naps both days. FUN!

Overall the weekend went pretty smoothly. The kids played with toys that they haven’t looked at in months and I feel like Jason and I spent more quality time romping around on the floor with the kids and just generally being silly. The silliness hit a peak on Saturday night when we spend some time in the play room before getting the kids ready for bed.

Both kids are taking tumbling classes on Saturday mornings. Cam’s class is basically an open gym where he can run around and climb on mats and things. Lily’s class has more structure and the kids are doing somersaults and learning to do cartwheels and hand stands. Lily decided to practice her handstand in the play room on Saturday night.

Next, Cameron decided to give it a go. He also started trying to do solo somersaults this weekend!

Much to Lily’s delight (and YOURS, I’m sure!)…Jason and I both joined in the fun!

Cutest Thing Ever

Cameron is sitting next to me on the couch holding his two Mickey Mouse toys. One is the traditional Mickey Mouse in the red pants and the other is an astronaut Mickey that we picked up at Epcot last month. I look over and he’s putting the two Mickey’s faces together and making them kiss…little lip smacking sound and everything. THEN, he says “I love you!”

I just remembered one more… We recently watched some videos from our Disney trip. We have some clips of the ‘Dreams Come True’ show in front of the castle. Ever since we watched that video Cameron calls out “Dreams Come True” any time he sees Cinderella’s castle. I’m pretty sure he thinks Disney World is called ‘Dreams Come True!’

OK…back to your regularly scheduled morning.

Weaned

I think I’m going to call it. Cameron hasn’t nursed since last Tuesday night. Even then he nursed for only a couple of minutes. He has let Jason put him in bed for the past six nights and he seems perfectly content with that. I’m not sure when he’ll let me put him to bed again though. I tried on Saturday night and as soon as we finished his books he flopped over and said, “Nu.” I tried to distract him by standing up and singing songs but he wasn’t being fooled. He went willingly when I handed him off to Jason though so I don’t think he was too upset.

I’m actually feeling pretty good about this! Yes, I miss snuggling with Cameron before bed but the nice thing is that I’ve been able to put Lily in bed for the past week. It’s been many, many months since I did Lily’s bed time and it’s been great spending that extra time with her. I think it’s also nice for Jason and Cam to spend a few extra minutes together. I guess it’s official…Cam is no longer my little baby. All traces of his babyhood are gone. He’s sleeping through the night, no longer nursing, talking more and more each day… *sigh* On the plus side, he’s a pretty darn sweet and funny toddler.

My Sides Hurt…

…from living with such comedians.

Like all little brothers, Cameron loves to do what his big sister does. If Lily hits herself in the head you can bet that Cam will follow suit about 30 seconds later. Lily holds her pancake in front of her eyes and says she can’t see it, Cam holds a piece of pineapple in front of his eyes (and ends up poking himself in the eye with said pineapple). Lily tells knock-knock jokes at the table and so does Cameron.

Cameron: Knock, knock
Jason: Who’s there?
Cameron: It’s Jude!
Jason: Jude who?
Cameron: It’s JUDE!

Admittedly he needs to work on his material but he’s only 17 months old… he doesn’t have a lot of life experience to draw from!

Five for Friday: Things Lily Thinks Will Come in Her Room at Night

1. Queens (specifically EVIL Queens)
2. Jafaar (from Aladdin)
3. Witches (who actually don’t come because they are home with their mommies)
4. Leprechauns (because they turn our milk green and make a big mess)
5. Ghosts (what kid isn’t afraid of ghost?)
