Couch to 5K: Week 9

I ran a 5K last night! Yes, it was on my treadmill so there was no uneven pavement or hills or anything to deal with and I didn’t have a fancy number pinned to my shirt but that’s not the point. This was the final week of the Couch to 5K running program and I’m proud to say that I stuck it out the entire time and completed my last workout at around 8:00 last night. All three workouts this week consisted of jogging for 30 minutes. I tacked on an extra minute to the final workout so I would actually run the distance of a 5K.

I felt strong during the workouts this week. Jason sat in the room while I jogged on Saturday night and even near the end of the workout it was pretty easy to have a conversation with him…I wasn’t too winded. My legs are sore today but it’s a good kind of sore.

My goal is to run three more times before our vacation in 9 days. I also plan to do weights two times this week. After we get back from vacation I think I’ll find a 5K training program to follow. I’ve found that I do so much better when I have a set workout program to follow. If I have something tacked to the wall with exactly what I’m supposed to do just staring at me I’m more likely to do it than if I’m left to create an exercise plan on my own. I also want to try 30 Day Shred. I may tackle that when we get back from vacation and then do the 5K training program later. We’ll see!

Five for Friday: Pet Peeves

1. People who run (for exercise) in jeans. If you are being chased it’s totally acceptable to run in jeans.

2. People who don’t wash their hands after using the bathroom.

3. Along the same lines…People who come out of the bathroom stall and go straight to the paper towels and dispense their paper towel before washing their hands. Really? Now they’ve just made the paper towel dispenser dirty with their dirty unwashed hands. Even worse is when they dry their hands and use the dirty paper towel to turn off the faucet and open the bathroom door as they leave. We need to have consistency people! Either everyone touches the paper towels after washing or everyone touches them before washing.

4. People who talk to you while you’re using a public restroom…especially strangers. I guess I have a lot of hangups about bathrooms, huh?

5. People who wait an inappropriate amount of time to hold a door open for someone else. Yes, it’s polite to hold the door open for other people but COME ON. If I’m 20 yards away I don’t want you to stand there holding the door open for me (unless my hands are REALLY full). All it does is make me feel like I have to hurry to get to the door since you’re being so kind as to hold it for me. New rule: Holding the door open for others is excused if the door would be closed behind you by the time the other person reaches said door.

Bedtime

Cam is nearly 16 months old and I feel like he/we might be getting the hang of this sleeping thing. Lately he has done a good job of sleeping the entire night in his bed. Granted, he gets up most mornings by 5:15 but everything leading up to that point is good. Until a few weeks ago he only wanted to nurse after getting his pajamas on and he would fuss until that happened.

Lately, however, he has been showing a big interest in books. He’ll sit next to the book shelf downstairs and pull every single book off of the shelf and flip through them all. Makes quite a big mess but I love that he’ll sit quietly for 10 or 15 minutes and flip through books.

Given this interest in books I have started reading him two books before bed each night. He loves it! We read ‘The Going to Bed Book’ and ‘I Love You Through and Through’. This week he has started to kind of read along. In ‘The Going to Bed Book’ the last page reads The moon is high. The sea is deep. They rock, and rock and rock to sleep. He always reads the last part with me, “Wok, Wok, Wok, Seep.” LOVE THIS! The last page of ‘I Love You Through and Through’ reads I love you through and through. Yesterday, today, and tomorrow too. There is a picture of the little boy holding his teddy bear and Cam leans up and plants a big kiss right on the boy’s face! Have you ever heard of anything sweeter than that? I KNOW! As I close each book he says “Eeee En” (The End). He’s such a sweet boy!

Fun/Not So Fun

Fun: Cameron has learned how to climb the kitchen tower.
Not So Fun: He likes to climb on it and turn the lights off and on and off and on and off and on…

Fun: Lily likes to talk to us while we eat dinner. Good family time!
Not So Fun: She talks SO much that forgets to eat and takes forever to finish a meal.

Fun: I lost 1.5 pounds this week!
Not So Fun: I really want a warm chocolate chip cookie.

Fun: Jason gets up at 5:00 every morning and rides the exercise bike for an hour.
Not So Fun: He starts to fall asleep on the couch by 9:30 every night.

Fun: Cam has taken a real interest in books lately!
Not So Fun: He pulls every single book off of the book shelf and flips through them…leaving them in a huge pile around him.

Fun: LOST comes back tonight!
Not So Fun: I’ll be so amped up when it’s over that I won’t be able to sleep.

Fun: Cameron has been sleeping through the night in his crib!
Not So Fun: There are times when I miss snuggling with him in my bed.

Restaurant Hiatus

Earlier this month Jason and I decided that we wouldn’t eat out for the entire month of January. This is kind of a big thing for us as evidenced by the fact that a quick review of our bank account reveals that we spent over $300 a month eating out in each of the past three months. That’s over $3600 a year. Ouch! Never mind our finances…it’s just not healthy for us. I decided that I needed to lose 5 pounds in January so I could fit into a particular pair of pants before our vacation in February. So far, I’ve lost 3 or 4 pounds so things seem to be working out!

We’ve been using our crock pot once a week and we’re actually eating more of our leftovers and freezing leftovers that we don’t eat within a day or two. It’s amazing how much our food waste has decreased this month. I feel like we’re actually eating all of the food that we buy. Interesting idea, huh?

Using the crock pot and cooking more interesting meals at home has helped with the no eating out rule but here we are on the 20th of the month and I could pretty quickly give a list of at least a half dozen restaurants I would LOVE to visit. Not to mention what I would do for a warm chocolate chip cookie or a brownie. Man, I am going to go crazy at Disney in a couple of weeks! Jason and I have spent way too much time plotting out where and what we are going to eat. We’ll probably make ourselves sick in the first two days. (Mental note…bring pants with elastic waist to wear on the trip home.)

BUT…we are on track and sticking with the plan. So, instead of walking down the road and getting a delicious 915 calorie burrito for lunch I’m going to savor my 260 calorie Lean Cuisine Fiesta Chicken! Please don’t be jealous of my life.
